Sports teams and traveling bands have been successful raising money to fund new sports uniforms, playing fields, or band trips. Taking a page from these playbooks, here are some ideas for funding your school’s first JamHub band studio.
Planning your Fundraising Initiative
- Clearly understand your financial goal. Define key fundraising efforts with clear timelines. Shorter timeframes keep your teams and donors engaged.
- Identify one enthusiastic chairperson (co-chairpersons) to organize your efforts and volunteer teams. Get your volunteers involved from the start!
- Determine your fundraising events based on what types of fundraising has worked in your school in the past - perhaps focusing on doing a few "larger" fundraisers rather than many small ones.
- Communicate throughout your fundraising efforts. Share your fundraising progress with students, teachers, parents and the local community to maintain enthusiasm for your project. Also, take pictures at
your events and share with current and future donors.
- When you reach your goal, share your JamHub success story with local press and recognize your sponsors, donors and volunteers. Your success with this campaign, will make it easier to raise money in the future.
Project Ideas
Tailor your fundaisers to your school community. Many schools have been successful with the following fundraisers:
- Sponsor a “Battle of the Bands” at your local school and charge admission. Kids will love playing on a stage, parents will love watching their kids play, and students will love listening to their friends.
- Solicit direct donations from your local community. Develop a flyer that explains the JamHub studio target and what it will do for music education in your school. Target musicians, education supporters, local music stores, and parents.
- Spotlight a school band at a community event – like a festival or carnival – and ask for donations for the JamHub studio. This will give your kids a chance to play in a public venue, and will raise awareness of the possibilities to play modern music at school.
- Hold a pledge-based event like a student walk. Choose a date, distribute pledge forms and have participating students collect pledges. Consider selling event t-shirts to raise additional money and drive awareness about the JamHub studio coming to your school.
- Hold a school raffle with product donations or host an auction with goods and services donated by individuals and businesses. Some examples are gift certificates to local restaurants, VIP parking space at school, or music lessons at a local music store.
- Sell school spirit wear like T-shirts or hats with a “cool” school slogan OR sell third party products like magazines ice cream, cookie dough, chocolate bars or discount cards.
An Inspirational Funding Story
One group of enterprising young musicians funded JamHub studios at their high school. Peligro 614, a band from Gahanna, Ohio won first place at the School Jam USA 2010. Not only did they win a trip to play at SchoolJam Germany, they won $5,000 for their school music program that was used to fund full JamHub studios for their high school. Watch this video to hear about their amazing story.
On-line Donation Funding
Many organizations are taking advantage of the reach of the internet for their fundraising efforts. Fundraising sites allow groups to market their fundraising initiative and request donations from a broad group of people. People will choose to contribute because they love your mission – to get more kids playing the music that they love, more often! (By the way, JamHub is not affiliated with any of these sites, but we do think it is a clever way to fund your jam studio.)
- KickStarter is a unique website that lets people know about your project mission, and gives them an easy way to donate to your project. Many projects have received funding through Kickstarter from people throughout the world. Learn more about starting your project at www.kickstarter.com.
- If you have a nonprofit group affiliated with your fundraising efforts, Network for Good might be a good place for raising awareness about your project, and collecting online donations. Check it out at www.networkforgood.org.
- Chipin.com is another site where you could collect donations for your JamHub studio. Chipin.com allows you to advertise your efforts and collect donations through a PayPal account. Learn more at www.chipin.com
